At the time of writing this, we are in the late days of May during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. New research is showing the sun’s UV rays have the ability to kill the virus on outside surfaces, as well as, Vitamin D’s benefits for fighting off the infection. Mother Nature heals. From the fresh air, sunshine (or rain!), streams and rivers, the outdoors is from and away my favorite place to do my exercising. This may not be true for everyone! And that is okay. Everyone’s preferences for an ideal environment are different, but I am going to detail why hiking is such an excellent option for exercise for just about everyone.
A Trail for Everyone
Any person that is able to walk can find a trail that is provides an appropriate challenge for a hike. Whether that is one mile on an even grade trail or 20+ miles up the side of a mountain, and enjoyable challenge awaits all that seek it. The vast variety of geographies of the earth, combined with the physical laws of our natural world creates beautiful obstacle courses. No equipment is required and there is no membership fee, no training or partners required. All that is needed is the shirt on your back and a map of the land.
Natural Intervals
One of the big trends of the fitness industry lately are High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT workouts. This basically means you accelerate the HR, back it down, then ramp it back up again. This interval training has shown favorable physiological benefits compared to steady state training or maintaining an elevated HR at an elevated level. In nature, these intervals come in the form of changing grade of the land. Walking uphill is more difficult than walking on a flat grade, so when you walk uphill, HR will increase and an active recovery will occur during more level surface walking.
